Satish Gujral

Satish Gujral (born 25 December 1925) is a Punjabi-Indian painter, sculptor, muralist, graphic designer, writer and architect who has consistently dominated the art scene in India for the entire post-independent era. He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 1999. He has received his education from Diploma in Fine Arts, Sir J. J. School of Arts, Mumbai in 1944-47, 1939-44 Mayo School of Arts, Lahore Student of D.A. Sequeiros Mural Techniques and Palacio Nationale de Belles Artes, Mexico in 1954. Gujral has been internationally acclaimed for his multi-talents of painting, graphics, sculpture, murals, architecture and interior design. Entombed in silence in his early years as a result of his hearing being impaired, he would draw and read Urdu literature, and in 1939 joined the Mayo School of Art in Lahore. In 1944 he joined the JJ School of Art in Bombay where he came into contact with the Progressive Artists Group (PAG). Unable to accept their European vocabulary or their techniques, he searched for a more traditional Indian modernism. He is also known for his large murals, commissioned around India and abroad. Gujral served as an apprentice of Mexican Masters Diego Reviera and David Alfaro Sequiros in the early fifties. From 1952 to 1974 Gujral had shows all around the world and has won numerous national and international awards. He lives and works in New Delhi. The Belgian Government honoured Gujral with the “Order of the Crown” for designing the Belgian Embassy. The only non-Belgian Architect ever to win this distinction. The same building was selected by International Jury among 1000 most outstanding buildings built in the 20th Century around the World. He was honoured by Mexico`s International Award for “Life Time Achievements” (Da Vinci Award). His experiments cover almost all spheres that fall under the umbrella of Plastic Art, Graphics, Paintings, Sculpture Murals, Object Design and Architecture. Six books of his works have been published besides an autobiography “A Brush with Life”. Several films have been made documenting his work and life. A full length feature film based on his autobiography is in the making.
